Engineering Majors outside Maine

If you'd like to major in engineering but the State of Maine University System (UMO, USM) does not offer the exact major you want, consider enrolling in another New England public university that offers your major, and save some money. Instead of being charged out-of-state rates, you'll be eligible for a tuition discount.

The Tuition Break Program allows Maine students to attend UNH, URI, UMass and UCONN if the university offers the major that is not available in the Maine University System. Here's a complete listing of engineering majors:
  • Biomedical Engineering: UCONN, URI
  • Ocean Engineering: URI
  • Environmental Engineering: UNH
  • Industrial Engineering & Operations Research: UMass-Amherst, URI
  • Management & Engineering for Manufacturing: UCONN
  • Material Science Engineering: UCONN
  • Nuclear Engineering, Plastics Engineering: UMass-Lowell
  • Ocean Engineering: URI
  • Sustainable Product Design & Innovation: Keene State College, NH
Surf the college's website to see if the university is a good fit for you, and check out their engineering pages to see what it means to be an "ocean engineer"!
Here's an example of the tuition discount you could receive.
UNH charges $23,000 for tuition to out-of-state students. With the Tuition Break program, you would be charged $17,000.
URI charges $24,000 for tuition to out-of-state students. With the Tuition Break program, you would be charged $13,000.
UMass Lowell charges $9,000 for out-of-state tuition, but with Tuition Break you would be charged $2,000.
What about other majors that are not available in Maine, in addition to engineering? Like acting, dance, outdoor education, meteorology, diagnostic genetic science, Chinese language, Greek language?
